I’m Davide Marchiori. I study how people learn, adapt, and reason strategically.

I am a behavioral and experimental economist. My research asks how individuals learn, adapt, and develop strategic reasoning through experience, and how they build, maintain, and transfer adaptive decision-making in complex environments. It is interdisciplinary, drawing on economics, psychology, and cognitive science, and combines laboratory experiments, process-tracing and eye-tracking, and computational modeling. My work has appeared in Science, Nature Communications, the Journal of Economic Theory, and the Journal of Economic Psychology.

I earned my Ph.D. in Economics and Management at the University of Trento, then held positions at the Technion in Haifa (as a Lady Davis Fellow with Ido Erev), National Chengchi University in Taipei, and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. From 2013 to 2023 I was at the University of Southern Denmark, where, as Associate Professor, I led LEADER, a four-year research program on learning in dynamic environments funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark, and supervised doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.

Since 2025 I have been Senior Research Scientist at the Center for Behavioral Institutional Design at NYU Abu Dhabi. There I work on applied behavioral research, including a study of excessive and conspicuous consumption in the UAE and a project with the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and on economic policy analysis for the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority. I am also project manager for the executive education program Behavioral Science for Government Leaders, and support the organization of the Behavioral Horizons lecture series and the development of a new Master’s program in behavioral science.

My current research follows two connected streams: the dynamics and transfer of strategic sophistication, and strategic decision-making with artificial agents. Across my roles I have enjoyed helping build research and teaching capacity, from securing external funding and setting up experimental infrastructure to contributing to a new Master’s program, designing an executive education program, and partnering with government and international organizations. I like working in teams, helping colleagues succeed, and taking on challenging projects.
